Racism

This is where potential new members learn more about <Europa> and old veterans tell their dragon tales. Feel free to post anything EQ related here or ask questions.

Hola,

Hello,

I don't think using the word racism is the most adequate here. People give their opinion based on what they see, not the country you're from or your language. I'm the first one who doesn't mind using spanish over tells, saying hi or little things in guild chat. However it's quite clear in the requirements that you must be able to communicate, more or less, in English. Some know more, some less, but we all make an effort to understand each other.
If each person from each country spoke only their own language I don't think <Europa> would be the best name.

Personally, the little bits I talked to him, Crome seemed nice, but people don't like the fact that an outsider to the guild has access to it whenever he wants to. Also some people seem to have had bad experiences with him, or with another person playing him.
He had a trial extension, they tried to get in contact with him...

Seeing the roster we have I don't think you should be complaining about racism. Go complain about it to TMO or FE if they don't take your lvl 30, for instance. And let us know what they have to say about it.

I don't mean to offend you, but I don't think your opinion is valid at all. If you don't like our rules none's forcing you to join.

The fact that she isn't even willing to respond us shows the kind of mature person we talking about.

Good Riddance.

I'll weigh in on this, but only in terms of the language barrier and its social implications. I'm American and I only speak English. I was in choir for many years, and our director was a huge fan of original Latin works, so I can pick up a word or two (written only) in some of the Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, etc). That is the absolute extent of my language experience. Just so you all know my personal perspective before I continue.

When I see other languages in /gu, it actually makes me quite happy. I'm glad our members ore comfortable enough with one another to use whatever language they are most familiar with. Once they've started a conversation, usually it goes to tells and I don't see the language anymore, which I'm fine with. I work on a college campus with a wide range of languages and social cultures (two Chinese nationals in my own department ... watching them have an argument in Mandarin is a riot :D ) so I guess I've gotten used to people speaking other languages around me. I don't consider it rude. I always think "that's probably the most efficient way for those two/three/however many people to communicate".

That being said, that's my personal experience. Xenophobia would dictate that the people speaking other languages around me must mean they are talking about me, and saying horrible things. I refuse to think that way. They could just as easily be talking about the weather, or sports, or EQ!!!

I guess my point is that in /gu I see no problem with various languages. If I want to know what you guys are talking about, I'll ASK. There's no harm in asking, and if you say "Officer stuff" or "The futbol game" or "Vaneer quest", I'll know. And hey, I might actually have something to contribute to that conversation. But I won't know until I take the initiative and ask. So what if there's a big conversation happening in French in /gu? If I really want in on it, I'll learn some French or I'll find another guild! (Just for the record, that won't happen ;) ) The overall feel of this guild is really positive, and I've been seriously tempted to start learning another language just so I can pick up some more of the more ... colorful ... things you all say lol :)

Anyway, I know that's not about the specific issue or people involved, but I do think people (in general, not necessarily in this guild) should be more accepting of language in general, and more accepting of the idea that "it's not about you" in particular.

Your positive message for the day! :D

Very good points Sune. Exceptions are ok, as I said, but I feel that if everyone was having conversations in their own language on guild chat, all the time, it'd be quite an annoyance to most people. It's not because they're talking about you, but rather that you're gonna be getting a lot of text you can't understand.

I like to pick some words too and I really missed on learning german when I played live (they had a chat channel and some people would join in to learn and we had a spanish channel for anyone to join in too). In fact I always have a web dictionary open to tab to for my translation needs :)

And with that said, this subject should probably be moved to a different thread. There's no point to keep bumping this nonsense when we wanna talk about something that does matter.
